Choose a map
These are Google maps of trips I have taken.
- These are entered "by hand", no cute little GPS device automatic entry ... yet.
- All these maps are of road trips, someday to be interlinked in one vast web of digital remembrances, except the last one, which simple records afternoon hikes I have taken here. I like the distance calculation it does. All you GPS users may now laugh at me.
- The challenge is to link them to pictures and stories. I have created a little script to glean the information I want from the map RSS feed.
- Of course Google lets you hang a title and description on each line or place object, but the UI is pretty painful and limited, so I would much prefer going the other way, writing my stories in Wordpress or some such and linking them back into the map. Haven't figured that one out yet.
- Note that there is a link to show the RSS feed for each of these maps
- The calls back to google.com to get the map can be pretty slow, so this would be a good place to use Ajax, to refresh just the left-hand column without having to re-retrieve the map. But I just don't feel like it right now :)
